A week in Rome is the version where the city's layers separate: ancient, papal, Baroque, and the twentieth century's fascist architecture — each with its own day. The classic three run unchanged; the deep days add the Borghese, Ostia, the Appian Way's catacombs, and one Florence teaser by fast train.
Budget at roughly €130 a day — about €910 for the week excluding flights. Rome rewards the single-hotel base: pick Monti or the Centro Storico and walk everywhere.

The Week's Layers
Ancient (day 1), papal (day 2), Baroque-and-piazzas (day 3), the Borghese (day 4), the ancient beyond — Ostia or the Appian catacombs (day 5), a Florence teaser by Frecciarossa (day 6, or Trastevere-and-Testaccio if you'd rather not leave), and the neighborhoods' Sunday (day 7).
The Florence Teaser
A 90-minute train each way buys the Duomo's piazza, David's gaze and a proper lunch. Honest verdict: it's a lovely day that usually convinces people to plan a Florence week — which is a fine outcome.
The Passeggiata Doctrine
Every evening ends with the walk — the fountains, the piazzas, the river at dusk. Rome's evening is free, scheduled nowhere, and the reason the week never exhausts you.

Should I do a Florence day trip from Rome?
The train makes it easy and it's a lovely day — but it usually just books the next trip. A Trastevere-and-Testaccio day is the alternative.
