Rome 5 Day Itinerary: The Deeper City

SL

Five days is where Rome trips stop sprinting. The classic three days run unchanged; day four belongs to the Borghese Gallery's timed hour or an ancient day trip (Ostia Antica's quieter ruins, the Appian Way's tombs); day five is the neighborhoods — Testaccio's market, Trastevere done slowly, Aventine's keyhole.

At roughly €130 a day, plan on €650 excluding flights. The extra days are the cheap ones — neighborhoods cost less than monuments.

Days 1–3: The Classic Arc

Ancient core, Vatican, fountains-and-piazzas — our 3-day itinerary's proven shape, with both big bookings made ahead.

Day 4: The Borghese or the Ancient Beyond

The Borghese Gallery's timed two hours (book weeks out) is Rome's best single collection. Prefer ruins? Ostia Antica gives Pompeii's feel at a quarter of the crowds, a 30-minute train ride away. The Appian Way suits cyclists and tomb-hunters.

Day 5: The Neighborhoods

Testaccio's market and the Monte dei Cocci, the Aventine's keyhole and orange garden, Trastevere done slowly with a Santa Maria in mind. This is the Rome that makes people move here.
