Japan's first-timer preparation is the most valuable hour in travel planning: the Suica setup, the Golden Route decision, the onsen and tattoo rules, the konbini economy, and the rail-pass verdict (usually no). This guide is the hour.

The Onsen Rules

The nationwide JR Pass repriced ~70% in 2023 and loses on the Golden Route — point-to-point (Tokyo–Odawara, Odawara–Kyoto, Kyoto–Osaka ≈ ¥25,000 total) beats the ¥50,000 pass. Regional passes win on specific routes; price your actual itinerary.
