The classic route: Taipei (3) → the east coast by rail (Hualien, 2) → the south (Kaohsiung, 2). The HSR runs the west in 90 minutes.

Taipei covers temples, 101, Beitou's springs and Elephant Mountain. Taroko Gorge (from Hualien) is the marble canyon. Tainan is the food capital; Sun Moon Lake the lake escape.
