A Paris weekend fails by overstuffing. The Eurostar from London and the TGV from Brussels land you before lunch, and the temptation is to cram the Louvre, the tower, Montmartre and Versailles into 48 hours — which turns Paris into a queue-connecting exercise. The weekend that works does less, better.

48 Hours, Hour by Hour-ish
Arrive before noon if you can; leave late Sunday. One anchor per half-day, everything walkable from the center.
Day 1
Islands, Marais & Golden Hour
Drop bags, coffee on the Île Saint-Louis, Sainte-Chapelle's glass, and a Marais afternoon — Place des Vosges, Rue des Rosiers, the Carnavalet's free city-history galleries. Sunset from Pont Alexandre III, dinner booked in the Marais or Saint-Germain.
Day 2
One Museum, Montmartre & Farewell
Museum at opening, a long bistro lunch (this is the meal the weekend was built around), then Montmartre late afternoon — Sacré-Cœur, the lanes, the view. Or invert it: Montmartre at opening, museum after lunch. Leave from Gare du Nord or Lyon with a paper bag of croissants.
The One-Museum Rule
With 48 hours you get one museum, chosen honestly. The Louvre if it's your first Paris visit and you book the 9am slot; the Musée d'Orsay if you value a manageable two-hour visit; the Musée de l'Orangerie if you want Monet's Water Lilies and out by lunch. Doing two museums in a weekend costs you a neighborhood — a bad trade.
Two Evenings, Two Moods
Book Friday or Saturday dinner in advance — this is not the city for walk-ins on weekends. One classic bistro in Saint-Germain, one livelier Marais or Canal Saint-Martin spot, and an after-dinner walk along the Seine, which at night is the best free attraction in Europe.
The Save-It-For-Next-Time List
Versailles, Disneyland, Montmartre plus the Louvre in one day, and any itinerary requiring more than four Métro rides a day. A weekend that ends with a list of what's next is a successful weekend — Paris is a relationship, not a transaction.
What to know before you go
Weekend logistics
- Stay central — Saint-Germain, the Marais or near your arrival station — so nothing needs a transfer.
- Métro single tickets or a carnet; you'll ride four times a day at most.
- Sunday: many shops close, but museums, cafés and the Marais largely stay open.
Booking ahead
- One museum timed ticket and two dinner reservations are the entire advance-planning load.
- Eurostar/TGV fares climb inside two weeks — book the train before the hotel.
