Where to Go
Mexico City is the museum-and-food capital (the Anthropología, Frida's house, the taco canon). The Yucatán stacks the ruins, cenotes and beaches. Oaxaca is the kitchen and the mezcal. Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende are the colonial tier.

The Cenote Doctrine
The Yucatán's sinkholes are the trip's air conditioning: open cenotes for swimming, cavern cenotes for snorkeling, and the deep cave ones for certified divers. Go early — the tour coaches arrive by 11.
