The third Kyoto day changes the trip: the first two cover the dawn essentials (Fushimi Inari, Higashiyama, Arashiyama); the third adds the northern temples — Kinkaku-ji's golden pavilion, Ryoan-ji's rock garden, Nijo Castle's nightingale floors — at a pace the two-day trip can't afford.
At roughly $140 a day, the trip runs about $420 excluding hotels in peak seasons. The dawn doctrine still rules: every hour before 9am is worth three after it.

Day 3: The Northern Temples
Kinkaku-ji's golden pavilion at opening (the reflection beats the crowd), Ryoan-ji's fifteen stones and their mystery, Nijo Castle's nightingale floors and the Imperial Palace's park. Nishiki Market's farewell grazing.
