Europe by Train: The Complete Rail Guide

Europe's high-speed rail network is the continent's secret superpower: city-center to city-center in 2–4 hours, airport-free, scenery included. This guide covers the arithmetic — booking windows, passes vs point-to-point, and the scenic lines worth routing for.

The Booking Windows

Every operator opens sales 2–6 months out, and fares only climb: the €30 TGV early bird becomes €150 walk-up. Book rail when you book flights — that's the whole rule. Eurostar, TGV, ICE, AVE and Frecciarossa all behave the same.

  • Eurostar: 2h20 London–Paris, book 2–3 months out.
  • TGV: Paris–Avignon 2h40 from €19.
  • ICE: Berlin–Munich 4h from €40.
  • Frecciarossa: Rome–Florence 1h30 from €20.

The Pass Verdict

Eurail passes lose on fixed two-to-four-city itineraries since the point-to-point early-bird pricing arrived. They win on multi-stop, flexible, long routes — Switzerland's and Japan-style pass countries are the exceptions. Price your actual route, always.

The Scenic Lines Worth Routing For

The Gotthard Panorama (Lucerne–Lugano), the Glacier Express (Zermatt–St Moritz), the Bernina Express (to Tirano), Norway's Flåm line, Scotland's west Highland line, and the Centovalli. Some journeys justify the destination.

The Booking Sequence

When and how.

  1. Day 1 · Book with the flights

Every intercity leg, at the early-bird window. Seat reservations on the premium trains are mandatory.

Practical planning info

Money

  • ✓Early-bird fares: €19–60 per leg if booked 2–3 months out.
  • ✓Walk-up fares run 3–5× higher — the only real mistake is lateness.

Station logic

  • ✓European stations are central — no airport transfers anywhere.
  • ✓Arrive 20 minutes early; platforms post 15 minutes out.

Frequently asked questions

▸Rail pass or point-to-point?

Point-to-point booked early for fixed itineraries — passes only win on flexible multi-stop routes.

▸Do I need seat reservations?

On the premium trains (Eurostar, TGV, ICE, Frecciarossa) yes — included with booked tickets.

▸Which is Europe's most scenic line?

The Gotthard Panorama or the Bernina Express — both justify a destination choice.
