City introduction
Stone Town's carved doors and the spice-island beaches beyond. Zanzibar City is divided between Stone Town, the UNESCO-listed Swahili trading quarter of coral-stone houses and carved Indian doors, and the newer Ng'ambo district across the creek. Stone Town was the capital of the Omani sultans and the heart of the clove trade, and its landmarks — the Old Fort, the Palace Museum and the waterfront Forodhani Gardens — sit within a few minutes of each other. The island's beaches at Nungwi, Kendwa and Paje lie 30 to 60 km north and east of the city.
