City introduction
The Mekong capital of gilded stupas and French shophouses. Vientiane is the smallest capital in South-East Asia, a low-rise city on the Mekong bend that mixes Lao temples with French colonial shophouses. Its national symbol is Pha That Luang, a gilded stupa of the 16th century that is the most sacred monument in Laos; the Patuxai, a concrete victory arch built in the 1960s, closes the avenue leading from the presidential palace. Wat Si Saket, the oldest temple still standing in the city, holds more than 6,000 Buddha images.
