City introduction
The world's smallest capital, on Mahé's granite coast. Victoria is one of the smallest capital cities in the world, set between the granite peaks of Mahé and the Indian Ocean. Its clock tower, a 1903 replica of Vauxhall's, marks the centre; the Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market beside it sells fish, spices and fruit from the island's farms. The National Botanical Gardens hold the endemic coco de mer palms, and the beaches at Beau Vallon and Anse Royale lie within a short drive along the coast.
