City introduction
The smoke that thunders — the Zambezi's mile-wide curtain of water. Victoria Falls is the Zimbabwean town beside Mosi-oa-Tunya, the mile-wide waterfall where the Zambezi drops 108 metres into a basalt gorge. The rainforest along the lip of the falls is permanently wet from spray, and the Victoria Falls Bridge, completed in 1905, carries the road and railway across the gorge between Zimbabwe and Zambia. The surrounding Zambezi and Mosi-oa-Tunya national parks hold elephant, buffalo and white rhino, and the town is the southern African base for rafting, canoeing and gorge walks.
