City introduction
The oldest living city on the Ganges, its ghats and temples. Varanasi — also called Banaras and Kashi — is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, built in a crescent on the west bank of the Ganges. Some 88 ghats of steps run down to the river, among them Dashashwamedh with its nightly fire ceremony and Manikarnika, the cremation ghat. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is the city's most sacred shrine, and Sarnath, 10 km north, is where the Buddha gave his first sermon.
