A baroque fortress city built by the Knights of St John. Valletta is the smallest capital in the European Union and the most concentrated: a fortified grid 1 km by 600 m, laid out by the Knights of St John after the Great Siege of 1565 and inscribed in full as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. St John's Co-Cathedral holds Caravaggio's Beheading of St John the Baptist and a floor of inlaid marble tombs, while the Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens look out over the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities opposite.
