City introduction
The world's southernmost city, gateway to Tierra del Fuego. Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world, set on the Beagle Channel between the Martial range and the waters that lead to Antarctica. The city grew from a penal colony founded in 1896, whose buildings now hold the Museo Marítimo y del Presidio, and is the base for Tierra del Fuego National Park, the Martial Glacier and the boats that run to the sea-lion and cormorant islands in the channel. Nearly all Antarctic expedition cruises depart from its port.
