City introduction

A white-and-blue Mediterranean capital beside the ruins of Carthage. Tunis layers a French colonial ville nouvelle onto a medieval medina whose Zitouna Mosque has anchored the city since the 8th century. The Bardo Museum holds the world's finest collection of Roman mosaics, and the suburbs reach the sea at Carthage, the Phoenician and Roman capital whose Baths of Antoninus are the largest in the Roman world. Sidi Bou Said, a village of blue doors and bougainvillea on the cliff above the Gulf of Tunis, is 20 km from the centre.
