A Spanish colonial walled city on the Caribbean. San Juan is the oldest European-founded city under United States sovereignty, founded in 1521 on a small island guarding the entrance to San Juan Bay. Its old town is encircled by the walls and bastions of Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal, the two largest fortifications Spain built in the New World, with the blue cobblestones of Calle Fortaleza and the 16th-century La Fortaleza between them. El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest in the US national forest system, lies 40 km to the east.
