City introduction
The Silk Road city of Timur's turquoise-tiled monuments. Samarkand is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Central Asia and the capital of Timur's empire, whose monuments are inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name Samarkand — Crossroads of Cultures. The Registan square holds three tiled madrasas of the 15th and 17th centuries; Timur's own tomb, the Gur-e-Amir, stands nearby, and the Shah-i-Zinda avenue of mausoleums and the vast Bibi-Khanym Mosque make up the rest of the Timurid ensemble.
