Mozart's baroque city on the Salzach, below the Alps. Salzburg is a baroque city on the Salzach river, built around the cathedral where Mozart was baptised and the Getreidegasse where he was born in 1756. The Hohensalzburg Fortress, begun in 1077, is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe and dominates the skyline above the Domplatz; the Mirabell Palace gardens across the river and the trick fountains of Hellbrunn Palace date from the era of the prince-archbishops who ruled the city as a sovereign state until 1803.
