A colonial capital at 2,850 metres on the equator. Quito is the highest official capital city in the world at 2,850 metres, built along a narrow Andean valley below the volcano Pichincha. Its historic centre is the largest and least altered in the Americas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of gilded churches — La Compañía de Jesús is covered in gold leaf — convents and plazas. The Basílica del Voto Nacional towers over it, the TelefériQo cable car climbs to 4,050 metres on Pichincha, and the equator monument at Mitad del Mundo stands 26 km north of the city.
