City introduction
Mauritius's harbour capital, between the Caudan waterfront and Aapravasi Ghat. Port Louis is Mauritius's capital and only city, wrapped around a sheltered harbour beneath the Moka range. Its centre holds the UNESCO-listed Aapravasi Ghat, the immigration depot through which nearly half a million indentured labourers entered the island from 1849, and the Citadel, an 1830s hill fort with a view over the whole city. The Caudan Waterfront and the Central Market carry the city's commercial life, while the Blue Penny Museum holds the 1847 Post Office stamps that are among the world's most valuable.
