Tahiti's harbour capital and the gateway to the Society Islands. Papeete is the capital of French Polynesia on the north-west coast of Tahiti, a harbour town that is the arrival point for the islands of the Society group. Its waterfront market sells pareu cloth, vanilla, pearls and the day's tuna; the Robert Wan Pearl Museum explains the black-pearl industry, and Notre-Dame Cathedral dates from 1875. The island itself is a figure of two circles of volcanic mountain, with the Arahoho blowhole, the Faarumai waterfalls and Point Venus on the coast road.
