City introduction

Sicily's Arab-Norman capital on the Tyrrhenian coast. Palermo was the capital of an Arab-Norman kingdom in the 12th century, and its monuments mix Byzantine mosaic, Fatimid arabesque and Norman architecture. The Palermo Cathedral and the Cappella Palatina inside the Norman Palace are the centrepieces, listed with the city's other Arab-Norman buildings as a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the Teatro Massimo is the largest opera house in Italy, and the street markets of Ballarò, Vucciria and Capo are the city's loudest institution.
