City introduction
Mexico's culinary capital, between Zapotec ruins and the Sierra. Oaxaca de Juárez sits at 1,555 metres in a valley of the southern Sierra Madre, a UNESCO-listed colonial city of green-stone churches and arcaded squares. The Templo de Santo Domingo and its former monastery anchor the centre, and the surrounding valley holds the Zapotec capitals of Monte Albán and Mitla together with the petrifying springs at Hierve el Agua. Mole, tlayudas and mezcal make it the most celebrated food destination in Mexico.
