City introduction
India's capital, with Mughal monuments and Lutyens' boulevards. New Delhi is the Lutyens-designed imperial capital laid out south-west of the older Mughal city of Shahjahanabad. Within a few kilometres stand the India Gate memorial and the Rajpath axis, the 72-metre Qutub Minar, the red sandstone walls of the Red Fort and the 16th-century tomb of Humayun, which set the template for the Taj Mahal. The Bahá'í Lotus Temple and the Mughal gardens of Sunder Nursery give the city two of its calmest corners.
