Oman's whitewashed Gulf capital, between the Hajar mountains and the sea. Muscat is a low, whitewashed city wedged between the Hajar mountains and the Gulf of Oman, with the Portuguese forts of Al Jalali and Al Mirani guarding its natural harbour. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, completed in 2001, holds the world's second-largest hand-knotted carpet and a chandelier of 1,122 lamps; Mutrah, the old port quarter, keeps its corniche, fish market and covered souq, and the Royal Opera House opened in 2011.
