A river-plate capital of markets, rambla and art deco. Montevideo sits on the northern shore of the Río de la Plata, its old town on a headland between the bay and the Atlantic beaches. The Mercado del Puerto, a cast-iron market hall of 1868, is the city's grill house; Plaza Independencia separates the Ciudad Vieja from the modern centre, and the Rambla runs 22 km along the water past the beaches of Pocitos and Carrasco. The Palacio Legislativo and the art deco Palacio Salvo are the city's architectural landmarks.
