City introduction
France's oldest city, between the Calanques and the Mediterranean. Marseille was founded by Greek settlers around 600 BC and is the oldest city in France, its Old Port still the centre of a working fishing and boating harbour. The basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde crowns the limestone hill above the port, the MuCEM at the harbour mouth holds the national museum of Mediterranean civilisations, and the Le Panier quarter keeps the layered streets of the old town. To the south the Calanques National Park runs for 20 km of fjord-like limestone inlets to Cassis.
