City introduction

The open-air museum on the Nile, with Karnak and the Valley of the Kings. Luxor stands on the site of ancient Thebes and holds the densest concentration of pharaonic monuments anywhere in Egypt. On the east bank, the temple complexes of Karnak and Luxor are linked by the Avenue of Sphinxes; on the west bank lie the tombs of the Valley of the Kings, the terraced mortuary temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahri and the two colossi that are all that remain of Amenhotep III's temple. Most of the tombs and temples are UNESCO-listed as part of Ancient Thebes.
