City introduction
The Red Sea gateway, with the coral houses of Al-Balad. Jeddah is Saudi Arabia's second city and the historic port of entry for pilgrims travelling to Mecca. Its old town, Al-Balad, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of coral-stone merchant houses with carved wooden roshan balconies, entered from the Red Sea corniche that runs 30 km along the coast. King Fahd's Fountain throws water 312 metres into the air offshore, and the floating Al-Rahma Mosque sits on stilts above the water at the northern end of the corniche.
