Fes, Morocco

City introduction

Fes, Morocco
Fes · Morocco

The world's largest car-free urban area and Morocco's spiritual capital. Fes el-Bali is a maze of some 9,000 lanes and the largest car-free urban area on earth, entered through the blue gates of Bab Bou Jeloud. Its landmarks are medieval: the Al-Qarawiyyin mosque and university, founded in 859 and often described as the oldest continuously operating university, the cedar and stucco courtyards of the Bou Inania and Al-Attarine madrasas, and the stone dye pits of the Chouara tannery, still worked by hand. Fes is also the country's craft capital, with copper, leather and zellige workshops throughout the medina.
