City introduction

New Zealand's Edinburgh, with the world's steepest street. Dunedin was founded by Scottish Free Church settlers in 1848 and keeps the closest thing in New Zealand to a Victorian cityscape, built around an octagon in the centre of a volcanic caldera. The railway station of 1906, with its mosaic floor and Royal Doulton tiles, is one of the country's most photographed buildings; Baldwin Street on the north-east valley slope is listed by Guinness as the steepest residential street in the world. The Otago Peninsula, east of the harbour, holds albatross, penguin and fur-seal colonies, and Larnach Castle above it is New Zealand's only castle.
