City introduction

Australia's tropical northern capital, gateway to Kakadu. Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory, a tropical city on the Timor Sea that was rebuilt after Cyclone Tracy flattened it on Christmas Eve 1974. Its waterfront and Mindil Beach carry the city's outdoor life, with the dry-season sunset markets running from April to October; the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory holds the territory's Aboriginal art, including the works of the Tiwi people. Kakadu and Litchfield national parks, both UNESCO-listed or of equivalent standing, lie within two hours' drive.
