The westernmost point of mainland Africa, facing Gorée Island. Dakar occupies the Cap-Vert peninsula, the westernmost point of mainland Africa, where the Atlantic meets a volcanic headland. Its landmarks range from the 49-metre African Renaissance Monument on the Mamelles hills to the House of Slaves on Gorée Island, 20 minutes offshore, which memorialises the transatlantic slave trade. The Museum of Black Civilisations, opened in 2018, and the Médina and Plateau markets carry the city's cultural life.
