Inca walls under Spanish arches, at 3,400 m in the Andes. Cusco is the Andes' historic capital: Inca masonry holding up colonial arcades around the Plaza de Armas, Qorikancha's golden temple under a convent, Sacsayhuamán's zigzag ramparts above the roofs, and the Sacred Valley — Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Machu Picchu — radiating outward. The dry season is trekking season; the city itself is the acclimatisation stop.
