Bruges, Belgium

City introduction

Bruges, Belgium
Bruges · Belgium

A medieval canal city of bell towers and Flemish art. Bruges was one of the wealthiest trading cities of medieval Europe, and its centre has changed little since the 15th century, which earned the whole historic core UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000. The Markt is dominated by the 83-metre Belfry, whose 47 bells carillon a Thomas Hardy tune; beside the Burg square the Basilica of the Holy Blood holds a relic brought back from the Second Crusade. Canals ring the old city, and the Groeningemuseum holds the finest collection of Early Netherlandish painting.
