City introduction
A Basque industrial city remade around the Guggenheim. Bilbao was a shipbuilding and iron city on the Nervión estuary until Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum Bilbao opened in 1997 and turned it into the standard example of a city remade by architecture. The museum's titanium curves stand below Mount Artxanda, reached by a 1915 funicular; the Casco Viejo on the right bank holds the 14th-century Santiago Cathedral and the seven streets of the original town, and the Mercado de la Ribera is the largest covered market in Europe.
