City introduction
A plain of more than 2,000 Buddhist temples on the Irrawaddy. Bagan is an archaeological zone of more than 2,000 surviving Buddhist temples, stupas and monasteries built between the 11th and 13th centuries, when the city was the capital of the Pagan kingdom. The monuments stand across roughly 40 square kilometres of plain beside the Irrawaddy river, the largest being the Ananda and Dhammayangyi temples, the 61-metre Thatbyinnyu and the gilded Shwezigon stupa. Bagan was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019.
