City introduction
Kazakhstan's mountain capital, below the Tian Shan. Almaty was the capital of Kazakhstan until 1997 and remains its largest city, built on a slope of the Trans-Ili Alatau range where the Tian Shan foothills rise directly behind the streets. The Ascension Cathedral, a 1907 wooden cathedral built without nails, stands in Panfilov Park; the Kok-Tobe hill gives the widest view over the city, and Medeu and the Big Almaty Lake sit within 30 km up the valley. The city's old Green Bazaar keeps its Soviet-era halls and produce stalls.
