The Mughal capital of the Taj Mahal on the Yamuna. Agra was the capital of the Mughal empire in the 16th and 17th centuries, and its monuments are the densest concentration of Mughal architecture in India. The Taj Mahal, built by Shah Jahan between 1632 and 1653 for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, stands on the south bank of the Yamuna; the red sandstone Agra Fort above it was the seat of government, and the abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri lies 40 km west. The garden of Mehtab Bagh across the river gives the classic view of the Taj at dusk.
